Restaurant Review - The Clay Pit

Pro’s: The naan bread was quite good.

Con’s: Rude wait staff; horrible, non-authentic food.

When I enter a restaurant, I expect to see some sign of the ethnicity it is supposed to represent. Long story short - there was no one of Indian descent in the entire establishment. When I asked the waiter about the kitchen staff, he replied, “The cooks are all Mexican… But our executive chef is an Indian.”

Needless to say the food was only slightly edible. I ordered Chicken Vindaloo and was presented with a pile of greenish colored chicken (sans potatoes) with a taste reminiscent of Chinese stir fry. Chicken Vindaloo should be a reddish color and should contain potatoes (aloo = potato). I politely asked that it be taken back and traded for an order of Chicken Tikka Masala.

Their Chicken Tikka Masala wasn’t even close to the real thing - it tasted like exactly like Sweet and Sour Chicken (you know, the same Sweet and Sour chicken you can get at just about every “Chinese” restaurant out there).

The service wasn’t exceptional and the waiter was quite rude and inaccurate in his representation of me to his manager (who wasn’t Indian). Basically I caught him complaining to his manager about my polite request to replace the “Chicken Vindaloo” with Chicken Tikka Masala.

The atmosphere was comfortable, but a bit dim. Because I arrived early, finding a space in their 10 car parking lot was not a problem (if you arrive when it is busy, good luck finding a close parking spot).

Grade: D (I am being generous)
